INTENSIVELY LEARNING OPTICAL OCEANOGRAPHY: BUILDING A LEARNING COMMUNITY
Fifteen students arrived as complete strangers at the University of Washington summer course in
optical oceanography at Friday Harbor. Within days, they began working as a team. By the end
of the course, they were a highly cohesive, collaborative learning community. This transformation was accomplished through three exercises designed to enhance communication, build trust, and develop the ability to make group decisions. These exercises and the resulting benefits to both students and faculty will be described.
