BUILDING A SEASONAL TO DECADAL-SCALE TIME SERIES OF OCEAN COLOR DATA FOR THE CALIFORNIA CURRENT
 
The California Current and especially its Southern California Bight have been among the most studied ocean areas in the world in terms of bio-optical measurements and ocean color algorithms (e.g. Smith and Baker, 1978 and others). It is therefore a good test site for initiating a decadal time series of satellite ocean color products. Combining data products from different sensors (CZCS, OCTS, SeaWiFS, MODIS, GLI, etc.) into a comprehensive time series is a difficult task due to differences is sensor characteristics and processing algorithms. We evaluate the influence of various bio-optical algorithms on the resulting time series. Validation of the satellite data is done using a comprehensive data set of pigments and optics from the CalCOFI program.
