INTERANNUAL VARIATION IN N. PACIFIC SURFACE CHLOROPHYLL OBSERVED FROM OCTS AND SEAWIFS, 1996-98
A time series of chlorophyll data for the North Pacific from November 1996 through November 1998 are obtained from a combination of OCTS and SeaWifs data. These data allow comparisons between winter and spring data before and during the 1997/98 El Nino and fall data covering pre-El Nino, El Nino, and La Nina periods. While the well-known impacts of El Nino on upwelling in the eastern Pacific are seen, there are also significant changes in chlorophyll and frontal structures within the subtropical and subarctic gyres. Concurrent physical change from other satellite sensors are presented.
