NUTRIENT RATIO EFFECTS ON BACTERIAL AND VIRAL REPRODUCTION IN THE WESTERN MEDITERANEAN
 
The MESOMED experiments, part of COMWEB, were designed to elucidate the response of the coastal Mediterranean plankton community to variations in nutrient loading ratios. Eight mesocosms received geometrically-increasing amounts of either nitrogen or phosphorus. The fraction of the bacterial community that was actively replicating was determined daily by immunological detection of the incorporation of bromodeoxyuridine, a thymidine analogue. At the same time, we followed bacterial and viral dynamics. After one week of modified nutrient loading, we measured the rates of bacterial production, grazing loss, the fraction actively dividing, viral infection rate and viral production, all of which differed markedly according to nutrient loading history.
