MARINE BACTERIOPLANKTON LIVE DEAD OR DORMANT?

The absence of consensus regarding the issues of activity and fraction of live bacteria has plagued the debate between marine microbiologists for quite some time now. Primarily this confusion can be traced back to the use of a large number of techniques that all yield numbers based on various restrictions and assumptions. Mixed with conceptual shortcomings the interpretations of the different numbers have become anyone's guess. The aim of this talk is therefore to present a likely scenario within which the different numbers can be understood. Basic physiological constraints of bacterial cells as well as life strategies analysed from an ecological perspective will be discussed. In particular the role of virus on bacterial activity and cell integrity will be examined.
