MARINE AGGREGATES IN THE SOUTHERN OCEAN - ANTARCTIC POLAR FRONT ZONE

Profiles made during the JGOFS AESOPS February-March 1998 Antarctic Polar Front Cruise with a Large Aggregate Profiling System (LAPS) recorded the concentration and size distribution of particles in the marine snow size range (>0.5 mm diameter). Profiles were made routinely twice a day and covered a oceanic section from north of the APFZ (53 deg. S) to a station north of the pack ice edge (69.3 deg. S) along 170 deg. W. The LAPS data set, combined with the CTD/transmissometer data set from the AESOPS program's profiling operation, reveals a complex dynamic of particle production and aggregation.
