ALGAE COMPOSITION OF SEA-ICE AND WATER SAMPLES IN THE HIGH ARCTIC AS DETERMINED FROM PHOTOSYNTHETIC PIGMENTS
The interactions between sea-ice of different ages and the pelagic ecosystem was studied on several transects perpendicular to the retreating ice edge in the Barents- and Greenland-Sea in May/June 1997. Ice cores from first year sea-ice (Barents-Sea) and multi-year sea-ice (northern Greenland Sea) and water column samples (* 100 m) were used to determine the spatial and vertical distributions of algae assemblages by means of pigment fingerprints (HPLC).
While in the Barents-Sea a classical ice-edge bloom could be observed, the pelagic system in the Greenland Sea was still in
