ACTIVITY AND BIOMASS OF ATTACHED AND FREE-LIVING BACTERIAL COMMUNITIES IN THE LITTORAL ZONE OF LAKE ERKEN
 
The biomass of bacteria and the bacterial activity of different surfaces, and of free-living bacteria, was studied in the littoral zone of mesoeutrophic Lake Erken, Sweden. The main focus was on bacteria attached to submersed, floating-leafed and emergent macrophytes, but bacteria attached to rock and mussels were also included as well as free-living bacteria and bacteria in surface sediments. For some of the macrophytes differences in the distribution of bacteria between older and younger leaves were observed. The aim of the study was to determine differences between and the relative importance of different attached and free-living bacterial communities.
