This contribution presents an overview of experimental studies carried out at the Institut de Ciencies del Mar, during the last ten years, in order to examine the effects of small scale turbulence on microbial plankton dynamics. The studies were made with natural coastal water enclosed in microcosms. The experimental designs combined treatments of turbulence, nutrient additions and predation pressure. Our data indicate that models of plankton dynamics should consider the existence of synergistic (non additive) effects involving interactions of turbulence with other variables. The comunication ends with a discussion about the agreement of our experimental results with conceptual formulations about the role of turbulence on plankton ecology.
