VIEWS THROUGH A PORTHOLE

You will be regaled with three subjects that are loosely connected with my life: (a) Reminiscences about the central-European university in the first half of the half of the century when biological oceanography and limnology developed; I entered toward the end of that period. (b) The developing and maturing of experimental aquatic field ecology (manipulation); I witnessed it as an admiring by-stander in Seattle. during much of the second half of the century. (c) The role of publishing at the right time in the right journal; I do not think that I will fully master this art even in the next century.
