INDICATIONS OF YEAR-CLASS STRENGTH BASED ON TRAWL AND TRAMMEL NET DATA

DATA FROM 1994 THROUGH 1997 FROM THREE STATIONS SAMPLED MONTHLY BY TRAWL AND TWENTY-EIGHT (10 TO 12)STATIONS SAMPLED MONTHLY BY TRAMMEL NET WERE ANALYZED BY TWO NONPARAMETRIC TEST(KRUSKAL WALLIS AND STUDENT NEWMAN KUELS) WITH RESPECT TO THE NATURAL HISTORIES OF FOUR SPECIES COMMON IN BOTH SURVEYS. THE SPECIES EXAMINED WERE SPOT, ATLANTIC CROAKER, SOUTHERN KINGFISH, AND SOUTHERN FLOUNDER. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS STUDY WAS TO CORROBORATE STRENGTHS OF YEAR CLASSES FOUND IN TRAWL SURVEYS BY SHOWING A REFLECTIVE YEAR-CLASS IN TRAMMEL NET SURVEYS FOR EACH SPECIES. SP0T, SOUTHERN FLOUNDER, AND SOUTHERN KINGFISH WERE NOT CAUGHT IN APPROPRIATE NUMBERS FOR REASONS THAT INCLUDE NATURAL BEHAVIOR AND GEAR SELECTIVITY. THE NATURAL BEHAVIOR OF ATLANTIC CROAKER AND THE GEARS EMPLOYED IN THIS STUDY WERE APPROPRIATE TO SHOW A REFLECTION OF YEAR-CLASS FROM 1994 THROUGH 1997.
