METHODS COMPARISONS FOR MEASUREMENT OF DISSOLVED ORGANIC CARBON AND NITROGEN IN AQUATIC SYSTEMS.
We have carried out a successful international exercise on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) over the past several years from which we have learned much about the difficulties in establishing and maintaining analytical comparability in routine measurement of biogeochemical parameters. This DOC "intercalibration" was a multi-stage effort leading from a small group of analysts to an international community effort with close to 100 participants and culminating with a continuing attempt to keep analyses "honest" through broad use of reference materials. The use of reference materials for DOC is still a young effort and preliminary evaluation of its efficacy will be presented. Differences between this open "refereed" broad participant approach and smaller interlab or intralab comparisons for DOC will be discussed with some examples. We are in the early stages of comparison of methods and instruments for measurement of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). Preliminary results from the DON intercalibration will be presented with
discussion of plans for expansion and for continuing intercalibration of all DOM analyses. It is hoped that discussion resulting from this presentation can be used to improve our community analytical capabilities.
