Welcome to ASLO!
For more than 50 years, ASLO has been a leading professional organization for researchers and educators in the field of aquatic science, working to provide for their needs at all phases of professional development. ASLO is best known for its highly rated research journals, its interdisciplinary meetings and its special symposia. The society supports increasingly important programs in public education and outreach and public policy. It strives to encourage student participation and to increase opportunities for minorities in the aquatic sciences. ASLO's mission statement is:
ASLO fosters a diverse, international scientific community that creates, integrates and communicates knowledge across the full spectrum of aquatic sciences, advances public awareness and education about aquatic resources and research, and promotes scientific stewardship of aquatic resources for the public interest. Its products and activities are directed toward these ends.
What's New At ASLO!
- The 2009-2013 ASLO Strategic Plan
- The 2007 ASLO Strategic Plan Committee reviewed the 1996 report entitled "The Future of ASLO Report and Recommendations" and noted that the organization has now implemented most of the listed recommendations. These changes have substantially strengthened ASLO. The 2009-2013 ASLO Strategic Plan includes an assessment of how well ASLO is accomplishing its Mission Statement, through an inventory of ongoing activities and the adoption of a set of Guiding Principles for Society action. The 2009-2013 ASLO Strategic Plan discusses what ASLO needs to do to implement its Mission Statement in the future, in light of the Guiding Principles. The Strategic Plan (177K PDF) is available to all members.

- NSF Academic Research Infrastructure Program
- As a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, NSF will invest $200 million in the Nation's research facilities and research training infrastructure. This investment will advance the science and engineering research enterprise at many institutions. For more information regarding this program, please click here.
- New L&O Bulletin Issue Posted
- The latest issue of the Limnology and Oceanography Bulletin (Vol 18, Issue 2, 2009, 3890 KB PDF) is available online.
- New L&O Issue Posted
- The latest issue of Limnology and Oceanography (Vol 54, Issue 4, 2009) is available online. This is the first issue posted as articles were ready for publication (see following announcement), and the issue was completed more than a month earlier than in the past!
- Dramatic Decrease in L&O Time to Publication
- L&O articles are now posted on the Web as soon as they are ready for printing; i.e., on a paper-by-paper basis. In the past, individual papers waited until the entire issue was completed. Under the new system L&O papers are being made available on-line up to 2 months earlier.
- L&O Among Top 100 Most Influential Life Sciences Journals
- The Special Libraries Association (SLA), on the occasion of its Centennial, conducted a poll of its BioMedical & Life Sciences Division to identify the 100 most influential journals in Biology and Medicine over the last 100 years. We are very pleased to announce that Limnology and Oceanography is on the list.
- 2010 Ocean Sciences Meeting (22-26 Feb 2010, Portland, Oregon)
- Members of the Ocean Sciences community are invited to propose a special session by 29 May 2009. Visit the Session Proposal section for more details.

- ASLO Career Directory 2009
- The ASLO Career Directory 2009 is a compilation of profiles of 124 students and early career scientists who are seeking positions in the aquatic sciences. Profiles are sorted by the type of position being sought (student, post-doctoral, technical, faculty). Profiles were submitted in preparation for the 2009 Aquatic Sciences Meeting.
- Award and Plenary Presentation Videos
- Beginning in 2008, award ceremonies are recorded for online viewing. The 2009 award ceremonies and plenary sessions were taped by the Information System Department of the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis thanks to a generous grant provided by the University. Click here to view the award ceremonies and plenary presentations online. Presentations can also be downloaded on iPods, Macintosh computers and PCs through iTunesU.
- Another year goes into Free Access Publication (FAP)!
- Most of the content of all three ASLO journals is freely available without a subscription. At the start of each year, another volume of each journal is moved into FAP. For 2009, the new all-free content is Limnology and Oceanography Bulletin vol. 16, Limnology and Oceanography: Methods vol. 3, and Limnology and Oceanography vol. 50.
