A MSc thesis project is available in the area of microbial ecology for a highly motivated candidate with interest in chemically mediated food web interactions: Food web structure and chemical ecology of microbial mats in high altitude salars of the Chilean Altiplano
This project is part of the German-Chilean collaborations project BIOMATS funded through the German Ministry for Education and Research and will involve work both in Cologne, Germany and in Antofagasta, Chile. The project investigates complex interactions between microbial mats and associated invertebrates in benthic communities of the high altitude salars in the Chilean Altiplano region. This project hence will involve field work, laboratory experiments and analyses in the laboratory using methods of analytical chemistry. Successful candidates should have a strong background in chemical ecology, microbial ecology or related fields. Experience in analytical chemistry is advantageous. Proficiency in English is essential, additional knowledge in German and/or Spanish would be very welcome.
The majority of the project will be conducted in Cologne, Germany, but involves at least one 30 day trip to Antofagasta and the Chilean Andes for sampling and field experiments. Funding is available for travel to and accomodation in Chile, but no salary and/or fellowship for the part in Cologne can be paid from the project. It is available starting from May 2013.
Applications should be in English and include a letter of interest and a CV. Please submit applications electronically to firstname.lastname@example.org before the end of January 2013. Contact:
