Graduate Student Assistantship, Zooplankton Ecology/Fisheries Oceanography
A research assistantship is available for a MS student interested in zooplankton ecology and/or fisheries oceanography. The student will work on a multi-institutional research project investigating linkages between zooplankton dynamics, fisheries resources and climate change in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Thesis work may include field sampling, laboratory analyses of zooplankton and ichthyoplankton samples, and retrospective analyses of historical biological, oceanographic and climatic data. Additional information on this research project is available at: http://www.northerngulfinstitute.org/research/abstract.php?pid=48
Interested students should have a background in marine ecology, fisheries, oceanography, or a related discipline. The assistantship includes a tuition waver and stipend support of $15-16,000. Enrollment into the graduate program in the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of South Alabama (USA) is required. Graduate work is administered through the Department of Marine Sciences from the main campus in Mobile, Alabama, but most students and faculty are in residence at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL), located about 35 miles south of Mobile. Applications for fall admission is due by March 1, 2010. A summer internship position at DISL before enrolling in graduate school is also possible. This graduate opportunity is made possible by funding from the Northern Gulf Institute, a NOAA Cooperative Institute.
Interested students should send a CV, cover letter describing their research interests, and names and contact information for three references to Dr. Frank Hernandez (fhernandez@disl.org). Information on the graduate program in Marine Sciences at USA is available at: http://www.southalabama.edu/marinesciences/
