PhD student position in lake sediment biogeochemistry
PhD-student position in Limnology/Aquatic Biogeochemistry with focus on the role of lake sediments in the carbon cycle
at the Department of Ecology and Evolution/Limnology, Uppsala University. Period of appointment: 4 years. For information on the research of the limnology program, see http://www.ebc.uu.se/limno/index.html
Starting date: As agreed upon, from the closing of the application time, preferably as soon as possible.
Description of the subject area: Freshwaters play a disproportionally large role in the carbon cycle of the continents, emitting significant amounts of carbon dioxide and methane to the atmosphere, while simultaneously burying more organic carbon in their sediments than the entire ocean. Embedded in the framework of three projects recently granted by the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning, we offer a PhD position aiming at elucidating the mechanisms regulating organic carbon burial, as well as greenhouse gas production, in boreal lake sediments. Results will be used to model the future feedback of the lake sediment carbon sink to climate change.
Eligibility: To be eligible for a PhD-student position, the applicant must hold a degree in aquatic biogeochemistry/aquatic ecology/limnology or other relevant subjects.
Ranking criteria: In ranking eligible candidates, special importance will be given to scientific skills in relation to the subject area specified. Previous experience from biogeochemical studies in water or sediment, in particular with respect to natural organic matter, and from environmental chemical analysis, is valuable. In addition, the ability to publish in English is meriting. In order to accomplish field work, a driving license is a must. In filling this position the university aims to recruit the person who, in the combined evaluation of competence, skills and documented qualifications, is judged most suitable to carry out and develop the work-in-hand and to contribute to a positive development of the department.
How to apply: The application should be written in English and should include a short description of the applicant and his/her research interests. It should also include a CV, copies of relevant examination certificates, as well as other relevant documents (e.g. letters of recommendation or names of reference persons).
