Graduate Student Assistantship, Phytoplankton Optics
NASA funding will support a graduate student (MS or PhD) to work with Dr. Bruce Hargreaves on phytoplankton optics. The specific project involves testing and optimizing optical measurements of cultured phytoplankton and natural assemblages of particles in marine and freshwater systems using novel and conventional instruments to determine the spectrum of light absorption absorbed and available for use in photosynthesis.
The NASA context for this project is estimating the flux of carbon dioxide in the Southern Ocean (and potential carbon sink) from Satellite data, and the role that phytoplankton play by controlling the pressure of CO2 gas in the upper water column.
The Dept. of Earth & Environmental Sciences has a dynamic group of faculty and students working across the disciplines of Ecology, Environmental Science, and Earth Science. Closing date for fall term admission is July 15.
