RESEARCH SCIENTIST - PHOTOSYNTHESIS (PH.D.) - ALGAL PHYSIOLOGY

Algenol is seeking to fill one full-time Research Scientist position in its Algal Physiology Group to perform research aimed at understanding and optimizing photosynthetic carbon fixation and ethanol production under the guidance of the Director of Physiology. A strong background in algal photobiology is required, and direct experience with cyanobacteria is highly desirable. Demonstrated knowledge and experience regarding the genetic and biochemical regulation of photosynthetic carbon fixation, cellular adaptation to light levels, and  measurement of photosynthesis and respiration rates, photosystem levels and activities, and Calvin Cycle flux  is preferred.  

Responsibilities Include:

  • Design and conduct sound scientific experimental protocols
  • Participate directly in bioreactor and experiment setup and execution
  • Perform in-lab analyses
  • Provide sound data assessment and report results
  • Contribute to the development of strain improvement and culture management strategies, based on experimental results
  • Guide technical personnel within work group
  • Support maintenance of specialized scientific equipment and facilities 
 

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Biology, Plant Physiology, Biochemistry, Botany, Marine Biology, Phycology, Limnology, or comparable discipline; post-doctoral experience in a related discipline expected
  • Demonstrated experience with comprehensive data analysis and synthesis
  • Proficient at reporting and presenting scientific results, reflected by solid publication record
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications
  • Fluent in written and spoken English 
  • Experience overseeing technicians and working in a team environment

 

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

  • Knowledge regarding potential approaches to optimize light capture for maximizing carbon fixation rates
  • P-I curve generation and analysis using both oxygen evolution and C‑14 fixation measurements
  • Pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometry measurements with cyanobacteria
  • Interpretation of transcriptomic and metabolomics data related to photosynthesis
  • Leadership and supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to coordinate the efforts of a multi-disciplinary research team
