Postdoctoral Researcher -- Thornber Lab

Postdoctoral Researcher -- Thornber Lab, U. Rhode Island starting July 1, 2014
The Thornber lab at the University of Rhode Island is searching for a highly talented and
motivated postdoctoral researcher with strengths in marine macroalgal ecology;
experience with Java and image analysis is preferred but not required. The position
begins July 1, 2014 and is for one year, with the potential to be renewed annually as
funding permits. The candidate will be based at the University of Rhode Island's
Kingston Campus but will visit URI's Narragansett Bay campus and surrounding field
sites on a regular basis. Salary: $44,000 plus full benefits.

Project Overview:
The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to collaborate with Dr. Thornber and her lab
on one or more existing, funded research projects in the Thornber lab that include aerial
mapping of macroalgal blooms, evolutionary responses of marine organisms to climate
change, and mathematical modeling of plant-invasive herbivore interactions. In addition,
the postdoctoral researcher will assist in the mentoring of graduate and undergraduate
students and assist in a limited capacity in a marine plant ecology course (Bio 418). As
time permits, the postdoctoral researcher is encouraged to develop an independent
research program as well. For an overview of the Thornber lab, please visit:

Qualifications:
I am looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated scientist (with Ph.D. awarded or
expected prior to July 1, 2014) who enjoys working as part of a team as well as
independently. The ideal applicant is expected to have a strong foundation in marine
macroalgal population and/or community ecology as well as the design and
implementation of manipulative experiments, with experience in using Java. At least one
first-authored publication in press is also expected. If interested, please send a C.V.,
statement of research interests that includes career goals (1-2 pp), pdfs of papers, and
contact information (emails and phone numbers) for three professional references to Dr.
Carol Thornber, thornber@uri.edu. (I am not at the 2014 Ocean Sciences Meeting.)
Please put “Postdoctoral Applicant” in the Subject Line. Applications will be reviewed as
they are received through March 31st, 2014.
