California Sea Grant (http://csgc.ucsd.edu/) seeks to appoint an Extension Specialist. This position will be based in San Luis Obispo, CA at the California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo (hereafter Cal Poly); however the Specialist will be an employee of University of California San Diego.
The role of an Extension Specialist is to develop solutions to high-priority coastal and marine issues, and disseminate information through diverse extension methods. Specialists utilize research as an outreach and education tool, organize symposia, workshops, and meetings to help local, regional, state, and national audiences identify resource problems. Specialists engage community leaders, industry, academics, and agency staff in projects that lead to better-informed public decisions. The successful candidate will be expected to develop collaborations with other researchers, organizations, industries, and educators to conduct integrated research, education, and outreach projects. The Specialists activities will integrate with the Cal Poly academic community, and will involve and promote greater interactions between Cal Poly and its local coastal communities. The Specialist will teach one class a year at Cal Poly as part of the marine sciences program, and also will advise undergraduate and graduate research projects.
The Specialist will have a background either in aquaculture, marine fisheries, coastal resource or coastal community sustainability, climate change, or marine ecosystem-based management. (S)he will be expected to obtain external support (grants or contracts) that can contribute to his/her program. The Specialist will have office and lab space on Cal Polys campus and access to the resources of Cal Polys Pier Facility including a flowing seawater system, a boating fleet, and a diving program.
This is a full-time, professional academic position. Candidates with a Ph.D. are strongly preferred. Experience with teaching at the college level (either as an instructor or teaching assistant) is desirable.
Salary is competitive and is based upon UCSD pay scales, commensurate with a candidates experience, but is expected to start in the range between $52,944 and $66,972 annually.
