ASSISTANT PROFESSOR of Oceanography

The Department of Sciences and Mathematics of the California Maritime Academy invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Oceanography. Applicants expecting to be considered at this time must have all materials arrive in the Human Resources Office by close of business day on January 11, 2013 to receive priority consideration for the position. ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA MARITIME ACADEMY (CMA):  The California Maritime Academy is a specialized campus of the California State University (CSU) system offering six baccalaureate degrees in, Business Administration, Global Studies and Maritime Affairs (GSMA), Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, and Marine Transportation. The Academy also offers a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management degree. The curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, coast guard and naval reserve officers.    The California Maritime Academy, serves a population of approximately 950 students.  The campus is situated in Vallejo on the shore of the Carquinez Strait and 30 miles northeast of San Francisco. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Department of Sciences and Mathematics provides general education courses in sciences, mathematics, computer sciences, and marine sciences for students majoring in the fields of business, engineering, engineering technology, global studies and maritime affairs, and marine transportation.

Responsibilities:
• Teach undergraduate courses in oceanography and marine biology
• Supervise students in the Marine Science Minor program
• Expand the existing marine science program
• Explore the potential of developing a new degree in marine or environmental sciences
• Engage in marine science or environmental science research
• Serve on department and Academy committees

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ph.D. in Oceanography or a related field
• Extensive teaching experience in marine and environmental sciences
• Demonstrated excellence in field-oriented research
• Working knowledge or interest in Geographic Information Systems as related to marine pollution studies
• Strong communication, leadership, and team-work skills
• Ability to work collegially and collaboratively as a member of the faculty

SALARY COMPENSATION:  Salary is commensurate with the education, qualifications and experience of the individual.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:  Typical classroom environment; office in two-story building with elevator access.
