Environmental Scientist IV

This is a time limited position through December 31, 2016. It is advanced, independent professional work performing research for technical projects in the biogeochemical/environmental field, preparing and reviewing technical publications, and coordinating the design and performance of technical projects as part of the Indian River Lagoon Algal Blooms Investigation (IRL-ABI).

Job duties include:

  • * Lead the IRL-ABI Sand Team, which comprises District staff, other public agency staff, and selected consultants. The Sand Team is responsible for conducting scientific investigation of the IRL system's submarine (sedimentary/groundwater) nutrient flux processes; including design and operation of technical surveys, data collection and analyses, and preparing interpretive reports on a strict time schedule as described in the project plans;
  • * Review applicable general and specific IRL literature regarding sediment/benthic chemistry, material transformation and flux including N, P, C, S, trace elements and potentially toxic substances for the purpose of preparing IRL-ABI project designs, interim and final reports, and technical presentations to audiences with varying levels of subject knowledge and expertise;
  • * Conduct analysis of relevant information and data, including appropirate statistical analysis, on sediment physico-chemical characteristics; develop data tables, graphs, figures and create or assist with creation of data reports; draft and submit articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals; attend professional symposia and participate in training to develop and/or improve professional/technical skills;
  • * Conduct sediment sampling/measurement fieldwork, including operation of multi-parameter meters; assist in the collection of sediment samples and water samples or other fieldwork as needed;
  • * Assist with contract and project management including development of statements of work, experimental design, review and processing of progress reports and invoices, and development of memoranda, reports, and correspondence.
Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, limnology, chemistry, botany, environmental science or related field and six years professional experience in the environmental field. A master's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, chemistry, limnology, botany, environmental science or related field can substitute for one year of the experience described above. A doctorate from an accredited college or university in biology, chemistry, limnology, botany, environmental science or related field can substitute for two years of the experience described above. Professional experience in environemntal protection or research can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

SJRWMD has determined this to be a mandatory-testing position as described in Section 440.102, Florida Statutes.
