Position Announcements

Post-doc and Technician in Phytoplankton Physiology

One or two
post-doctoral positions and one technician position are available associated
with two recently funded projects to examine: I) Acclimation and adaptation of
diatoms to elevated temperature, and II) Macromolecular responses of phytoplankton
to environmental conditions.

POST-DOCTORAL POSITION(S)

Candidates for the post-doctoral positions should have a PhD in marine science,
oceanography, or environmental chemistry or related field and have experience
with marine phytoplankton culture and estimating growth rates.  Experience
with transcriptomics, measuring macromolecular and elemental pools (C, N, P,
Si), and photosynthetic and respiratory rates in phytoplankton would be
beneficial.  The candidate needs to be interested in learning new
techniques, be able to work independently as well as part of a team.

The post-doctoral positions are full-time 1-year appointments that are
potentially renewable.  Send a cover letter and CV and contact information
for 3 references to Dr. Zoe Finkel at zfinkel@mta.ca.

RESEARCH TECHNICIAN POSITION

Research technician position summary: The candidate will be the primary
laboratory technician for the Marine Macroecology Lab at Mount Allison
University http://mmab.ca/.  The candidate will be responsible for
co-supervising student research, maintaining phytoplankton cultures, running
laboratory experiments, and maintaining laboratory equipment.

Qualifications: Candidates for the technician position should have a M.Sc. in
marine science, oceanography, or environmental chemistry or related field or a
B.Sc. with a minimum of two years of laboratory experience.  Preferred
qualifications include experience with marine phytoplankton culture, including
making nutrient media, and familiarity using fluorometers, spectrophotometers,
microscopes and cell counters.  Experience with biochemical assays for
protein, carbohydrate and lipids and measuring photosynthetic and respiratory
rates would also be a benefit.

The position is a full-time, 1-year appointment with a 6-month probation period,
and is potentially renewable.  Send a cover letter and CV and contact
information for 3 references to Dr. Zoe Finkel at zfinkel@mta.ca.
