Associate Director, User Services

Ocean Networks Canada is seeking an Associate Director of User Services. The Associate Director will foster the growth of committed users of a world-leading ocean observing system, and ensure that the stakeholder community receives the necessary resources, access, and support to plan, execute and complete their objectives.

The primary responsibilities of the Associate Director, User Services are to:
 Manage the functional areas responsible for education and outreach, communication, and user data products, and ensure that the services provided by these areas meet the needs of ONCs Science Services group and ONCs broader stakeholder community.
 Negotiate externally with stakeholders to develop uses of the facility.
 Participate in the development and implementation of strategic plans that support the missions and goals of ONC, and the University of Victoria.
 Participate in internal and external reviews of facility performance, and assist in the preparation of annual reports and funding proposals.
 Provide direct advice and guidance to other divisions, especially regarding the provision of services to and meeting the needs of users.
 Provide support and counsel on governance and management issues, and works collaboratively with all ONC management positions to design operational and funding strategies.
 May act as Chief Scientist on maintenance cruises, responsible for staff safety during ship based operations and infrastructure maintenance activities.

The following is a list of preferred qualifications and experience. An equivalent combination of skills and abilities may be considered.
 Ph.D. in Computing Science, Ocean or Marine related Sciences or Engineering.
 At least ten years of experience or equivalent in ocean research, preferably with experience in communicating ocean science and applying ocean science in education and outreach.
 Demonstrated networking skills and collaborations on large research projects.
 Demonstrated organizational and project management skills.
 Good interpersonal and communication skills.
 Demonstrated understanding of recent advances and innovations in ocean technologies, data delivery, the Internet, social media, and education approaches.
 Experience with the translation of complex data to a wide range of users.
 Sound background in data product development and delivery, preferably in support of interdisciplinary research objectives.
 Must be able to demonstrate two-way translation between end user business requirements and the technical capabilities (and limitations) of the technology.
 Ability to set and meet goals with defined performance metrics that impact both the unit and the overall organization.
