Research Technician (Molecular Microbial Oceanography / Flow Cytometry)
The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), located in Moss Landing, CA, is seeking to fill a Research Technician position in the lab of Dr. Alexandra Worden. The research focus is on eukaryotic phytoplankton, microbial interactions and carbon cycling. A variety of approaches ranging from traditional oceanography to lab-based culture work and genomics are used to investigate these organisms and their ecological roles. Major initiatives in the lab also include targeted transcriptomic and metagenomic methodologies. Individuals at ease with instrumentation troubleshooting and verification are strongly encouraged to apply. General responsibilities include flow cytometry (both analysis and sorting), research cruise participation, data analyses and performing routine lab management/organizational tasks. It is expected that over time the individual would become responsible for training other researchers to use the flow cytometer.
Requirements for the position are a B.S. or M.S. (preferred) in biology, microbiology, or a related field, or an engineering background. The candidate must have strong written, verbal, organizational and interpersonal skills, and must be proficient with basic computer spreadsheet and graphing programs such as Microsoft Excel. She or he must be able to work in both independent and team-oriented settings, and should be comfortable interacting with a diverse group of researchers. Experience with molecular biology techniques, sterile cell culture and flow cytometry is desirable.
