Postdoctoral Fellowship in Applied Invasion Biology
Fisheries and Oceans Canada is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to contribute to the Great Lakes’ Ballast Water Management Program for prevention of aquatic invasive species. A main goal of this applied research program is to develop rapid, standardized methods to test the biological efficacy of ballast water treatment systems, specifically, developing methods for rapid assessment of density and viability of bacteria, protists and plankton in ballast water samples. Experiments are conducted at the Great Lakes Laboratory for Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences in Burlington, Ontario, with possibility for experimentation at the ship scale on commercial vessels operating globally. Tools available for this research include fluorescence microscopy, FlowCAM, high-resolution laser optical plankton counter, and image analysis systems.
The position will be offered as an NSERC Visiting Fellowship (VF) in a Canadian Government Laboratory. The VF Program provides promising emerging scientists with the opportunity to work with research groups or leaders in Canadian government laboratories and research institutions. Fellowships are awarded for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second and third year. Current VF value is $46,536 per year. Eligibility Criteria and further information about the VF Program can be found at www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca.

Makes recommendations regarding areas of investigation needed, creates test plans to accomplish specific research goals, and evaluates results. Duties characteristically include responsibility for the design and implementation of research protocols; developing analytical approaches; carrying out experiments; organizing data; interpreting results; developing supervisory skills and responsibilities; collaborating with other scientists and engineers; and preparing reports, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations. Expected to assume increasing amounts of responsibility and perform assignments more independently with progress in an area of interest. The ideal candidate will provide technical excellence, creativity, and initiative while collaborating with colleagues and partners in a positive and growth-oriented environment.

-PhD in Aquatic Ecology, Marine Biology, Environmental Science or related field, received within the past five years
-Excellent writing, communication, and critical-thinking skills as demonstrated by publications
Asset Qualifications:
- Field and/or laboratory experience in plankton ecology and/or invasion biology
- Experience operating a FlowCAM, laser optical plankton counter and/or image analysis system
The selected candidate must pass Reliability Security Clearance. Overnight travel to the U.S. and/or international travel may be required on short notice. Interested applicants are asked to send a curriculum vitae, a statement of research experience and interests, and the names and contact information (phone, e-mail and address) of three references to Dr. Sarah Bailey (sarah.bailey@dfo-mpo.gc.ca).
