Research Technician — Microbiology

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is a non-profit oceanographic research institute, dedicated to the development of state-of-the-art instrumentation, systems, and methods for scientific research in the oceans. MBARI’s research center includes science and engineering laboratories, as well as an operations facility to support our research vessels and oceanographic equipment, including remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles.
The research focus of this position is on eukaryotic phytoplankton, microbial interactions and carbon cycling. A variety of approaches ranging from traditional oceanography to lab-based physiology work and genomics are used to investigate these organisms and their ecological roles. A major initiative in the lab is the development of targeted transcriptomic and metagenomic methodologies. General tasks include flow cytometry, research cruise participation and integration with other research groups, data analyses and performing routine lab management/organizational tasks. It is expected that over time the individual would become responsible for training other researchers to use the flow cytometer.
B.S. in biology, microbiology, or a related field required. M.S. preferred. The candidate must have strong written, verbal, organizational and interpersonal skills, and must be proficient with basic computer spreadsheet and graphing programs such as Microsoft Excel. The incumbent must be able to work in both independent and team-oriented settings, and should be comfortable interacting with a diverse group of researchers. Experience with molecular biology techniques, sterile cell culture and flow cytometry is desirable. Individuals at ease with instrumentation troubleshooting and verification are strongly
