Post Doctoral Fellow
Iron is a critical micronutrient for all plant species including those associated with the marine environment. Indeed iron has been found to be the growth limiting nutrient with respect to the growth of phytoplankton in large areas of the worlds oceans. Thus how this element is acquired, stored and processed is of critical importance to such diverse areas as oceanic primary productivity, alternate energy sources and global carbon sequestration. This project, which seeks to determine the mechanisms of iron uptake and storage in both micro and macro marine algae, is funded through an on-going NSF/DFG International Chemistry Collaboration grant between Prof. Carrano and Prof. Dr. Berthold Matzanke at the University of Luebeck in Germany as well as a CA SeaGrant. The position is available for 1-2 years with a salary commensurate with experience. The ideal candidate will have interest and experience in one or more of the following areas: molecular biology, marine biology, biophysics(i.e. Mossbauer, EPR, and XAS spectroscopies), FISH, Q-PCR, RT-PCR and other molecular biology techniques. San Diego State University is located in beautiful San Diego CA and has been rated as the number one "Small Research University" in the USA for several years in a row. If interested, please provide a cover letter describing your research interests and experience, a current resume, and contact information for two or three references to Dr. Carl J. Carrano by e-mail or apply directly at https://jobsfoundation.sdsu.edu/applicants/jsp/shared/frameset/Frameset.jsp?time=1265997717293. For more information please feel free to contact Dr. Carrano. Applications will be reviewed starting at the end of March 2010 and continue until the position is filled. The San Diego State University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
