Postdoctoral Researcher - Great Lakes Wetlands
Established in 1892, Central Michigan University has an enrollment of 27,000 students, including approximately 20,000 students on the university's main campus. Classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a doctoral research university, CMU is recognized for strong undergraduate education and a range of focused graduate and research programs. CMU is a student-focused university with opportunities for leadership, internships, and off-campus volunteer programs. CMU competes at the NCAA Division I-A Football Bowl Subdivision level in athletics and is located in Mount Pleasant, an expanding mid-Michigan community of approximately 25,000 permanent residents. A recently developed tourist destination point, Mount Pleasant has retained its small-town flavor while embracing a wide variety of special interest groups and outdoor recreation opportunities.
This is an open postdoctoral position to work with Dr. Don Uzarski and Dr. Ian Davison and other CMU faculty members on collaborative projects designed to: a) measure primary productivity and carbon cycling in Great Lakes coastal wetlands, b) to understand the response of these communities to multiple stressors induced by changes in environmental conditions including invasive species, fluctuations in lake level, and increases in temperature and UV-R, and c) develop protocols to measure productivity and disturbancesuitable for routine monitoring of these ecosystem. Candidates should have (or be awarded prior to taking the position) a Ph.D. in biology or a related discipline and have experience in plant or community ecology or physiological ecology, preferably involving marine or freshwater submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) or wetlands. Salary will be commensurate with experience (~$40K/year plus benefits). Position begins after March, 2010.
This is a two-year appointment, with continuation beyond the first (and subsequent) year contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funding. The post-doc will be expected to assist in writing grant proposals focused on wetlands, SAV and carbon cycling . The post-doc will be required to spend the summer months (mid-April to mid September) at Central Michigan University’s Biological Station (CMUBS) on Beaver Island located in Northern Lake Michigan; the position includes accommodation cost at CMUBS. For the remainder of the year the position will be based at the University’s main campus in Mount Pleasant Michigan. A valid driver’s license is required and experience with, or willingness to learn, small boats handling and SCUBA is preferred.
