Oceanographic Research Technician – Chemical Oceanography
The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) is seeking an energetic and motivated research technician to fill a vacancy in the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) laboratory. Only technicians with demonstrated prior sea-going and analytical laboratory experience need apply. Our research at BIOS is focused on understanding the biological, chemical and physical processes that control the ocean carbon cycle.
This is a sea-going position and applicants must be willing to actively participate in the year-round biweekly and monthly cruises and interact closely with the other 4 technicians in the BATS lab. Cruise range in duration from 7-14 days. Primary laboratory responsibilities will include 1) HPLC analysis of plant pigments, and 2) processing of primary production samples (assayed using 14C radioisotope), both collected as part of the core BATS program. Other activities required for the successful completion of the BATS program may be assigned as necessary. A Master of Science degree in chemical oceanography is preferred. The successful applicant will have strong quantitative skills, be highly motivated and organized, and contribute to the overall intellectual capital of BIOS. Starting salary will be based upon current qualifications and previous experience, with the Research Technician categories at BIOS allowing for significant advancement.
