Marine Science Research Technicians
Fisheries Oceanography of Coastal Alabama (FOCAL), Dauphin Island Sea Lab
Immediate openings for two (2) marine zooplankton and two (2) marine ichthyoplankton taxonomists/research technicians
Responsibilities: Sort and identify zooplankton, fish eggs and fish larvae from plankton samples. Assist in the collection of marine zooplankton/ ichthyoplankton samples during monthly plankton surveys in coastal marine waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico. Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of lab and sample collection equipment.
Qualifications: MS or BS degree in marine sciences, fisheries oceanography, marine biology, or related fields. Applicants should demonstrate a general understanding of the fields of physical and biological oceanography. Applicants should have some experience working with dissecting microscopes. Knowledge of the zooplankton and ichthyoplankton taxa of the northern Gulf of Mexico is highly preferred, but not required. Applicants should be comfortable working at-sea under variable weather conditions. Applicants should be able to perform physically demanding tasks consistent with working in the field. Data management skills, including familiarity with QA/QC protocols and computer databases, are desirable.
Compensation: Starting full-time salary is competitive and full benefits, including medical and participation in the retirement system, are provided. Salary rate is dependant upon education or experience. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until August 27, 2010, or until the positions are filled.
