Postdoctoral Research Fellow: Marine Ecology and Fisheries
A full time postdoctoral fellowship is available for an independent and statistically skilled individual to participate in a project examining the efficacy of deep water marine protected areas and the ecology of associated fishes. The MPAs are located in the Main Hawaiian Islands below conventional SCUBA depths (100-400m). This project uses non-extractive baited camera techniques to obtain video of commercially valuable bottomfishes in and out of the MPAs where fishing is prohibited. Data on the abundance and sizes of bottomfishes is subsequently extracted from the video for statistical analysis. A substantial database of field observations is available and field work is ongoing. The project is collaborative between the National Marine Fisheries Service and the State of Hawaii, Department of Aquatic Resources. The successful candidate will participate in some field work. Primary responsibilities will be developing statistical methods and models for data analysis to evaluate the importance of various environmental, habitat, and protection variables on bottomfish abundance and size frequency distributions.
Qualifications: PhD in Marine Biology, Biological Oceanography, Fisheries, Statistics or related field. Strong statistical skills including the use of GAMMs and GLMs, preferably in the statistical language R. Experience with baited camera techniques is desirable but not required. Willingness to participate in some field work, sometimes under adverse sea conditions, is required.
Salary: $60,000/yr depending upon qualifications. The position is available for one year with renewal for another year dependent upon performance and funding.
Closing Date: Review of applications will begin May 28th . Selected applicant to start on or after July 1st.
Applications: Please email a cover letter stating your research interests and accomplishments, current CV, and the names and contact information for three references to: Dr. Jeff Drazen, jdrazen@hawaii.edu, 808-956-6567.
