Research Technician - Environmental Quality Program
The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) was founded in 1903 and incorporated in the State of New York in 1926 as a U.S. 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. The institute's mission is to conduct scientific research and education of the highest quality from the special perspective of a mid-ocean island. A Research Technician is required to assist with the operation of the Environmental Quality Program at BIOS. This program provides research and monitoring capabilities for the Government of Bermuda and also maintains the BIOS marine atmospheric observatory at Tudor Hill. Current and recent activities include: ambient air quality monitoring (airborne particulate matter, SO2/NOx, PAHs, rain/aerosol chemistry); research on mercury levels and sources in the local atmosphere; and evaluation of emissions from a municipal solid waste incinerator. Other activities have included monitoring of contaminants in groundwater, drinking water and soil.
The main duties of the technician will include: 1) Maintenance and operation of air sampling and monitoring equipment; 2) Preparation and analysis of samples; 3) Operation of analytical equipment; 4) Data analysis and management. Other duties will be assigned by the Principal Investigator to ensure the successful functioning of program. Some weekend and holiday work is required, for which compensation will be provided. The successful applicant will be required to acquire Bermuda light truck and scooter driving licenses.
The Environmental Quality Program is a dynamic and varied program that often functions in response to regulatory needs at short notice. The ideal candidate will therefore need to be flexible, reliable and conscientious and possess good personal organization skills. Some physical activity, including servicing instrumentation on a 23 m tower and lifting heavy loads, is required.
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in one of the physical sciences. The position would suit a recent graduate. Some experience of air pollution chemistry and/or instrumental analysis would be a distinct advantage.

Appointment will be made at Research Technician Level I or II (depending on qualifications), with corresponding starting salaries of $28,421 and $32,483. A start date of September 2009 is anticipated.
