Position Announcements
Research Associate Modeling Data Support
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) is developing a modeling system to investigate the effects of land use, watershed management, and climate change on the NYC water supply. The following position is available to work with NYCDEP modeling staff on development of the data and database systems that will of support these model based investigations. This position is for two years with possibility of renewal for an additional two years. The position is located in Kingston, N.Y., 100 miles north of NYC in the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson River Valley
The scientist will develop and maintain a comprehensive data library of spatially-referenced time series data to support simulation modeling of NYC watersheds and the system of reservoirs that comprise the NYC water supply. Data are used in an evolving suite of integrated watershed, reservoir, and system models and include both historical and near-real-time meteorology; stream flow and chemistry; watershed management; reservoir flows, chemistry and operations. These data currently are available from a variety of sources within the NYC DEP and other external organizations.
Specific tasks include:
• Evaluate and recommend appropriate software and structure based on application requirements, data sources and formats.
• Quality control and integrate historical modeling data into database
• Establish data sources, pathways, methodologies and protocols for comprehensive and regular updating of historical data, and for near-real-time data streaming.
• Assist in development of tools used for integrated analysis of data to support model development
• Develop tools, interfaces and inter-connections between data and models.
The candidate should have a M.S. degree or equivalent experience in computer sciences, civil engineering, or a related discipline. Experience in database development and management for water resources applications would be preferred.
