Position Announcements
Postdoctoral Research Associate
The School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences (SAFS) at the University of Washington (UW) announces the availability of a full-time position for a Postdoctoral Research Associate. We seek a research colleague who will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers studying the seasonality of distribution (horizontal, vertical) and abundance of early life stages of commercial groundfishes (walleye pollock, Pacific cod, arrowtooth flounder) in the eastern Bering Sea. The Postdoctoral Associate will synthesize biotic and abiotic data derived from ichthyoplankton research cruises (2008-2010) to provide a better understanding of the potential effects of hydrographic variations on egg and larval fish dispersal. The project involves retrospective ichthyoplankton studies (historical distribution, abundance) and process-oriented field work (e.g. spawning patterns, transport, production). The Postdoctoral Associate will also utilize biophysical models to describe key oceanographic features that influence dispersal. This project is a joint effort among researchers at the UW SAFS, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC), and the University of Alaska. The incumbent will be employed through the UW SAFS and based at the AFSC in Seattle, WA. The successful applicant will work within the NOAA/AFSC Ecosystems and Fisheries-Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (Eco-FOCI) Program (http://www.ecofoci.noaa.gov/). For further project information please review the website: http://bsierp.nprb.org/index.htm. Project subcomponent: Ichthyoplankton Surveys O.2.
Appointment: Full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month fixed-term appointment, to start at the earliest in the Fall 2008 and no later than January 1, 2009. Renewal of appointment (12 additional months) is at the discretion of the principal investigators, and is contingent upon performance. Limitation on appointment: Must be within six years after receipt of Ph.D.
Salary range: $3580 - $3800 per month ($43,000 - $45,500 per year)
Location: (joint appointment)

Responsibilities and Duties: The successful applicant will conduct statistical analyses of egg, larval, and juvenile distribution and abundance in relation to environmental and climate variability. Participation in multiple research cruises in the Gulf of Alaska and/or the Bering Sea is required. The Postdoctoral Associate will disseminate the project results through departmental seminars, national meetings and peer-reviewed publications. The Postdoctoral Associate will work with a large team of biologists, oceanographers, and modelers to integrate results into a broader ecological context (i.e. predicted effects of climate variation, bioenergetics implications, effects on recruitment).
Requirements:
Ph.D. in quantitative marine ecology, biological oceanography, fisheries, ecology, biostatistics or related disciplines.
Prior experience in fish early life history, dispersal, and/or spatial analysis and particle tracking using oceanographic models.
Experience with advanced statistical analysis, such as Generalized Additive Models (GAM) and geostatsistics recommended.
Good organizational skills, proven ability to manage large and diverse data sets, and willingness to work and collaborate in an interdisciplinary group are essential.
Candidates should also have experience and knowledge of population ecology and spatial statistics techniques.
Strong written and oral communication skills are essential. Applicants must be able to communicate with a diverse group of stakeholders including scientists, fisheries managers, conservationists, and the public.
The University of Washington is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer. The University is building a culturally diverse faculty and staff and strongly encourages applications from women, minorities, individuals with disabilities and covered veterans.
