- Program Summary
- MAST is an interdisciplinary program targeted at underrepresented students (diverse populations). It combines marine science, marine policy, the heritage of African Americans and Native Americans on Chesapeake Bay and under sail, and seamanship. Students learn to sail a 53 foot ketch during this month long experience. Inquiry-based learning includes a field-based project and hands-on study of the oxygen depletion of bottom waters of the Bay. We sail the entire length of the Chesapeake and visit all of the important laboratories and museums on its shores. We also visit governmental agencies and foundations involved with Bay policy, as well as the commercial fishery. Twelve students participate each year.
