| Measurements of the backscattering coefficient |
 |
| The backscattering coefficient is important in many areas of optical oceanography. Recently new instruments have become available that estimate the backscattering coefficient. Three such instruments used to measure the backscattering coefficient were deployed during the HyCODE experiment in July of 2000 conducted off the LEO-15 site in New Jersey. The three instruments include the HOBI Labs hydroscat, the WETLabs eco-vsf, and a prototype phase function instrument built and operated by the Marine Hydrophysical Institute. Measurements were collected in a wide range of conditions, including clear and turbid waters. The turbid water cases include both high sediment and high biological loads. We compare the estimated backscattering by the three instruments in different optical conditions. We examine possible sources of errors of the various methods for determining the backscattering coefficient. |
