| CARBON DISTRIBUTIONS AND FLUXES IN THE NORTH WATER, NORTHERN BAFFIN BAY, 1998 AND 1999 |
 |
| Carbon distributions and fractionation in the North Water region of northern Baffin Bay during 1998 (April - July) and 1999 (August - October) were highly variable, both in space and time. Consistent with biogenic drawdown, spring surface dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations dropped by as much as 200 micromol/kg by late summer. Based on observed changes in total carbon concentrations and estimates of air-sea CO2 fluxes, we estimate a total biological and advective carbon export from the surface waters (defined by the depth of maximum annual mixing) between April and October of up to 10 mol C/m2 in some areas. |
