| The South Atlantic Bight Synoptic Offshore Observation Network (SABSOON) |
 |
SABSOON is a project supported by the National Oceanographic Partnership Program in which a real-time observational network is being established on the continental shelf off Georgia. The network utilizes the infrastructure of a combat flight training range (a 115 x 50 km array of eight towers, 50-100 km offshore) maintained by the Tactical Aircrew Combat Training System (TACTS, Beaufort, SC Naval Air Station). Oceanographic and meteorological instruments have been deployed at two central platforms where TACTS provides power and access to wide bandwidth microwave communications. Data are continuously logged on the towers and transmitted to shore hourly. Here we present: 1) the instrument, power and communications systems that are currently operational; 2) data acquisition and data processing schemes; 3) system designs for extension of the network to outer platforms, where power and communications will be independent of TACTS systems; 4) an overview of the project web site (http://www.skio.peachnet.edu/ projects/sabsoon.html). Challenges posed in the first year of operation are also discuss" href="albuquerque2001.css">
