| THE OUTBREAK OF RED TIDES IN THE COASTAL WATERS OFF KOHUNG, KOREA 2. THE TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL VARIATIONS IN THE HETEROTROPHIC DINOFLAGELLATES AND CILIATES |
 |
| We investigated the temporal and spatial variations in heterotrophic dinoflagellates (HTDs) and ciliates from June to September 1997 in the waters off Kohung where red tides have frequently occurred. We took water samples from 5 depths at 3 stations in five cruises. A huge red tide dominated by Gyrodinium impudicum outbroke on August 24. The species numbers and densities of HTD and tintinnids (TIN) reached to maximum numbers on August 27. The maximum densities of HTD, TIN, and naked ciliate (NC) were 45, 39, 57 cells/ml, respectively. The distributions of HTDs (dominated by Protoperidinium spp.) and diatoms had a positive correlation, while NC and autotrophic dinoflagellates (ATDs) did. This evidence suggests predator-prey relationships between HTDs and diatoms and between NC and ATDs. |
