| GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE ARCTIC: AN INTERACTIVE PROGRAM LINKING RESEARCHERS WITH K-12 STUDENTS |
 |
| Sensitivity of the Arctic to climate change has consequences for human society, particularly for the indigenous peoples of arctic marginal seas. Scientific data from recent studies have documented decreases in ice extent and thickness, increased UV levels due to ozone depletion, and higher summer temperatures. This program uses an existing arctic global change research program to develop an interactive partnership between scientists at The University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) and K-12 students and teachers of the Port Aransas ISD on issues that relate to arctic living resources and native cultures.
The thematic program is largely based on the use of graduate students as resource persons to K-12 teachers to assist in the procurement, analysis, and interpretation of published and digital resources. Additional support is provided for teacher training on arctic and global change issues through symposia and workshops. The program also introduces teachers and students to indigenous cultures that are directly affected by global change through visits by Alaskan natives under the ARCUS Arctic Visiting Speakers' Series. Details on the K-12 program are presented on the following Web site.
