| PROPOSAL FOR AN NSF INITIATIVE IN MARINE MICROBIAL GENOMICS-THE WORKSHOP REPORT |
 |
| The recent development of high through-put genomic sequencing capabilities and associated genome-based technologies now provides an opportunity to discover not only a more complete picture of the metabolic capacity of marine bacteria currently in culture, but also of those that have eluded cultivation attempts. The technologies needed to approach questions demanding a genomic perspective are highly specialized. The Ocean Sciences Division at the NSF identified the need for focused efforts in the developing field of marine microbial genomics. A workshop was convened by a group of investigators representing the marine microbial and genomic communities. The primary objective of this workshop was to discuss and develop an advisory document that will provide critical information addressing the current and projected needs of the marine microbial community in genomic sciences and technologies. The hope is that this document will serve as a catalyst to efforts spawning new programs focused on the development and use of genomic technologies in marine microbial ecology within and between the directorates at NSF as well as outside agencies. The proposed initiative and recommendations made by this workshop will be presented. |
