| LINKING AQUATIC SCIENCE & LITERACY THROUGH INTERNET-BASED RESOURCES |
 |
| An important audience to consider in making connections between aquatic science and society is the group of approximately 44 million adult Americans who function at low literacy levels. These adults are workers, consumers, voters, parents, and grandparents, many of whom attend federally-funded adult basic education classes to improve their skills in reading, writing, and math. Adult literacy instructors use scientific contexts and Internet-based resources to teach these basic skills, because we have seen that adult learners find scientific topics to be quite fascinating. Furthermore, when they learn about science, these learners do not feel that they are in remedial programs, because they learn far more than the general population knows about science. Using the National Institute for Literacy Science & Numeracy Special Collection of online resources as a guide, this presentation will focus on best educational practices, important interactive investigations, and proposed models for merging aquatic sciences with learning. |
