| THE MARINE AND AQUATIC RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATES: LINKING RESARCH AND UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION AT A RESEARCH UNIVERSITY |
 |
| The Marine and Aquatic Research Experience (MARE) is a field-intensive, self-governed, undergraduate research program in which student teams construct new knowledge while designing and executing their own research agenda in estuarine dynamics, biogeochemical cycling, and anthropogenic impacts on the second largest watershed on the East Coast. MARE is linked with the main curriculum through two courses "Comparative Studies of Watersheds and Estuaries in South Carolina" and "Estuarine Chemistry: Principles and Methods". Since its inception MARE has conducted seven research expeditions in Winyah Bay, South Carolina. Over sixty marine science, biology, and engineering majors from the University of South Carolina have been involved in these expeditions. Currently the students have organized themselves into four thematic research groups: Water Chemistry, Physical Mixing, Estuarine Biology, and Sediment Dynamics. We are currently seeking ways to engage students and faculty regionally and nationally and to expand MARE to other estuaries in the state. Our goal is to develop MARE as a national model for research-based learning in aquatic sciences. |
