| ABIOTIC AND BIOTIC PROPERTIES OF PERMEABLE SUBLITTORAL SANDS |
 |
| Four nearshore sublittoral sites located in the German Bight, North Sea, are characterized with emphasis on advective porewater flow as a driving force for solute and particle transport. All sediments are permeable sands. However, as permeabilities cover more than two orders of magnitude from 1E-13 m^2 (fine sand) to 4E-11 m^2 (coarse sand) the intensity and vertical extension of porewater flushing is expected to differ as well. The investigated parameters include the solid phase (grain sizes, particulate organic carbon, extracellular polymeric substances and photopigments) as well as the porewater (nutrients and dissolved organic carbon). The discussion of sediment properties focuses on indications of significant advective porewater exchange. |
