| A PRELIMINARY CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM FOR TEMPORARY LENTIC WATERS OF NORTH AMERICA |
 |
| Temporary, lentic waters have been studied for various purposes in select regions, and have been characterized in diverse ways over time. This has led to terms that are region- or taxon-specific (or both), and thus confusion reigns in the nomenclature and taxonomy of these ecosystems. For example, presenters at a session on Temporary Aquatic Habitats at the ASLO/ESA meeting in 1997 could not agree on a common term to express the systems discussed in that session. We are developing a preliminary classification system to serve as a common basis for describing and comparing research on temporary lentic waters. The system is based on hydrology (hydroperiod predictability and duration), underlying geomorphology, watershed position, climate, water chemistry, and vegetation. The preliminary classification attempts to: organize the nomenclature of the diverse temporary lentic waters of North America; take into account existing classification systems (e.g., HGM, NWI), and express ecosystem traits. We will invite a critique and discussion of the preliminary system at the meeting. |
