| GROWTH OF CALANUS FINMARCHICUS NAUPLII IN RELATION TO FRONTAL STRUCTURES ON GEORGES BANK |
 |
| Growth rates of Calanus finmarchicus nauplii were studied across two frontal regions: (1) a shelf-break front located along the northern edge of the Bank in April 1999 and (2) the tidal mixing front centered along the Bank’s 60 m isobath in June 1999. In April, naupliar volume increased 50-100%/d. Growth rates were 35-75% higher within the frontal zone than on the fronts’ bankward and seaward sides. In June, naupliar volume increased 50-90%/d. Growth rates were 3-7% lower within the frontal zone than in adjoining. Naupliar growth rate was significantly related to both water temperature and the standing stock of chlorophyll a. The highest growth rates in the study were measured at the lowest temperature. |
