| PORE WATER IRRIGATION AND PARTICLE REWORKING IN SHELF SEDIMENTS OFF CAPE HATTERAS, NORTH CAROLINA |

| Br- tracer experiments and excess Chl-a and 234Th inventories were used to measure pore water irrigation and particle reworking at the sediment water interface along the continental shelf break region off the North Carolina, Cape Hatteras coastline during July and August, 1996. Sediment cores were collected along 3 primary East-West transects in water depths from 100-500 meters. Excess 234Th (24.1 day half-life) is present at all stations, with values in surface sediments (0-0.5 cm) ranging from 13-50 dpm g-1 and with penetration depths to >5-7 cm. There is no discernible cross-shelf (i.e. depth-dependent) variability in excess 234Th. Br- tracer added to retrieved cores and incubated at in situ temperature show penetration depths of 7-10 cm in < 1day at some stations, implying significantly higher solute transport rates, well above diffusive-based estimates. Chl-a and chl-a/phaeophytin distributions in sediments are indicative of input of fresh organic detritus, with labile material reaching deeper stations. These data demonstrate a significant cross-shelf, particle flux at the Cape Hatteras continental shelf/shelf break which is capable of introducing reactive C to significant depths (at least 500 meters) over relatively short time scales. Introduction of this material results in intense rates of particle and solute transport by benthic marine fauna as determined using methods described here. |
