| BACTERIAL COMMUNITY DYNAMICS ALONG WITH THE CHANGJIANG RIVER |

| The Changjiang River is the third longest river in the world. The huge Three Gorges Dam, being constructed for irrigation and generation of electric power in the middle of the river, is expected to lead to changes of river water quality. Our aim in this study was to observe the bacterial community structure in the Changjiang River for comparison with future changes. We collected river water samples for bacterial community structure analysis at several points along the river; the analysis was done by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and random cloning of 16S rDNA obtained by PCR with bacterial universal primer sets. Cluster analysis based on DGGE profiles revealed that bacterial communities were gradually and continuously changed with flow downstream. The DGGE profiles of bacteria sampled upstream of Lake Poyang Hu, located in the middle reaches of the river, differed drastically from those sampled downstream of the lake, in both 1998 and 1999. Cloning analysis of 16S rDNA revealed that the dominant bacterial group shifted to Actinomycetales from beta-Proteobacteria as the river flowed downstream. The relationship between the changes in bacterial community structure and nutrient concentrations will be presented. |
