| EFFECTS OF NUTRIENT ADDITIONS ON THE FATE OF PRIMARY PRODUCTION IN TWO ARCTIC LAKES, NORWAY |
 |
| To estimate the transfer of added nutrients to higher trophic levels in Arctic lakes, primary production, zooplankton grazing and sedimentation were measured in two ultraoligotrophic arctic lakes receiving nutrient additions and in one reference lake. Nutrient additions (from 3 to 10 µg total-P L-1) increased primary production with an order of magnitude. The proportion of primary production grazed by mesozooplankton increased, whereas the proportion lost to the sediments decreased in both the fertilized lakes, indicating an increased efficiency of nutrient transfer to higher trophic levels. |
